Toast Can Boast

This week, we ventured a bit north of Lincoln, to the Fallbrook neighborhood and took a trip to Toast.  We must say, it did not disappoint.

Food

Sarah's Mr. C's sandwich

Sarah - 10
One of the first things I said to Anna after I took my first bite was “Holy moly.”  It was seriously delicious.  I ordered the Mr. C’s club sandwich which had Spicy Capicola, pepperoni, Genoa salami, and provolone cheese, topped with Italian fusion vinaigrette.  I had the choice of bread and I chose a French baguette. Wow.  Seriously, so delicious.  I ordered the club sandwich expecting it to be cold-cut, and it was toasted and warm and wonderful.  The fries that were on the side weren’t salty, but we agreed that they didn’t need any salt, they were flavorful enough without it!  Home run in the food department, for sure.

Anna's French dip sandwich

I ordered the French Dip Sandwich, which was very traditional with thinly sliced roast beef and melted provolone cheese on a French baguette with a side of au jus dipping sauce.  I got a side of french fries and it also came with a pickle spear.  The French baguette alone gave this the 10. It was super soft with a nice layer of crunch to it.  You could taste the butter on it.  Wow.  Just wow.  As Sarah said, the fries weren’t overly salty, and they didn’t need it.  Overall, everything was simple and exquisitely done.

Price

$12 for a full sandwich and a side order of fries isn’t out of this world expensive, but it also isn’t a bargain.  We agreed that for a young, working professional, Toast would be the ideal dinner location.  However, for a college student on a budget, it might have been a bit pricey.  We both saved half of our meal, so it really turned into two, but we also didn’t feel entirely full when we were done.  Unfortunately, the food was outstanding and worthy of being a little higher priced.

As Sarah said, we agreed this is a great place for a young professional with an actual salary.  For college students like us, it’s a little pricey for us.  I don’t enjoy paying 13 dollars for one meal.  I saved half of my sandwich, but I honestly probably could’ve finished it there, but I forced myself to save it.

Service

Sarah - 8
Our waiter was super friendly.  Like.  Extremely.  He joked with us asking if we wanted to get “fun” water with lemon and asked if we had found the “most delicious item on the menu yet.”  He wasn’t the quickest at coming back to us when we said we just needed another minute to look at the menu, but our food came out much more quickly than I was expecting.  He definitely earned his 20%.

The restaurant is seat yourself, and Sarah and I sat at a slightly dirty table.  Our waiter washed it off for us, but only after he had brought the menus, our silverware, and our drinks.  So we had to awkwardly hold them all in the air.  Granted, it was nice he cleaned it at all, so I shouldn’t complain.  He also pulled our straws for our water out of his sweatshirt front pocket, which seemed a little strange to me.  But overall the service was really fast, and our server was extremely friendly.

Atmosphere

We went out for this meal on Wednesday night, in the middle of a rain/sleet/hail/snow storm.  Poor planning.  But the minute we walked into the restaurant, it had a wonderfully cozy feel to it.  We found a booth in the back, quiet area of the restaurant.  It was just the kind of warmth we needed on the dreary evening.  I didn’t notice any background music, but the temperature in the restaurant complemented the outside weather--it was a bit on the warm side.  I definitely wasn’t complaining after being pelted with sleet on the way inside.

Anna - 10
Yep we tackled this review in the middle of a gross rain/sleet/snow/disaster storm, and it was perfectly miserable outside. Again as Sarah said, the restaurant had a very warm and cozy feel to it.  On the menu they noted how parts of the restaurant, like the mouldings and cabinets, were reclaimed from historical buildings around Lincoln.  How cool is that?  There’s clearly a lot of pride in the restaurant.  Our food was served on cool metal trays, and, overall, I think there’s a great balance of trendiness with coziness.

Convenience of Location

Sarah - 6
What was a nice 10 minute drive from campus was made a bit more difficult by needing to take the highway the whole way there.  Even though it was a quick 10 minute trip, it would be nicer if it was closer to the heart of Lincoln.  There are backroads that will take you there, but that could turn into a 25 minute excursion.  I don’t know that we’ll ever be able to find the perfect location for the perfect restaurant!

Anna - 5

Guys.  Why?  Why do I always have to drive 15 plus minutes to all of these restaurants?  I mean, wow, they’ve all been good, but as it gets colder and snowy and gross, I’m becoming even less excited to drive to these places.  At least this drive was on the highway, which is obviously a lot less waiting at stoplights than regular city streets.
